Why People Lose Hair

By: Legacy Hair Center

Do you find strands of hair clinging to your comb, or collecting in your bathroom drain? Don't be alarmed . Most of the time, it's just your hair going through its normal stage of shedding. On the average, you lose 50 to 100 strands of hair each day. Shed hair is replaced by new hair, and the hair growth cycle starts over. However, if you notice your hair thinning or falling out excessively , you may need to seek professional help to avert baldness, or alopecia.

Alopecia can affect anyone. And- it’s not always determined by “the mothers genetics”. Truth is, there are several causes of alopecia. Let us take a look at a few reasons why people lose hair.

The most common cause of baldness in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness. This is caused by increased levels of androgens or male hormones. It may be hereditary. You may notice an M-shaped thinning of hair in your temples and crown if you are a male, or thinning in the central and frontal scalp if you are a female.

On the other hand, a bald spot on your scalp may be due to alopecia areata. In this condition, your immune system produces antibodies that normally fight off harmful microorganisms, but instead damage your hair follicles, leading to hair loss that appears as smooth round patches.

If you underwent surgery or had a severe illness during the last 3 months, you may also notice hair loss that is more than what you're used to. As a natural reaction of your body to a stressful life situation, about 50% of your hair enters the resting phase of hair growth. Because shed hair is not immediately replaced, thinning of your hair becomes apparent. This temporary hair loss is called telogen effluvium. Your hair will grow back once the underlying illness resolves.

Hormones also play a role in hair loss that is associated with thyroid diseases and pregnancy. An excess or a decrease in your thyroid hormones may lead to alopecia. After giving birth, the abrupt decrease in the level of the female hormone estrogen causes temporary yet massive hair shedding. Other medical conditions that may lead to hair loss include fungal infections, diabetes, lupus and intake of certain medications.

“You would think that most of of our hair loss clients would be men,” says Ronnie Talent, SEO of Legacy Hair Center in Charlotte. ” Roughly 70” of our new hair loss inquiries are women. Many people don’t realize that 25% of women will also suffer from thinning hair.”

Are you aware that even your hairstyling habits can cause hair loss? The constant pulling of your hair when you wear pigtails, cornrows or a tight ponytail damages your hair follicles, leading to traction alopecia. Improper and frequent use of hair treatments may also weaken your hair and cause breakage. Some people are unable to control the impulse to pull out their hair. In these cases of trichotillomania, psychological intervention is also necessary.

Finding the reason why you lose hair is important. It will guide your dermatologist or hair specialist in deciding which hair loss option is appropriate for you. You may have to receive oral and topical medications, or undergo procedures such as laser hair therapy, hair transplantation, or hair replacement. “The Hair Replacement technology that is used today is the same technology used in Hollywood, “says Talent . “Now- if you suffer from hair loss, you have the option to use that technology, and look the way you want to look.”

The important thing is that you seek consult from an expert, who can guide you to the right diagnosis and give you the best possible treatment.

Baldness Cure For Men

By: John Z.

Are you a man who is looking for the best baldness cure? First thing first – you have to start with understanding the cause for your baldness. There can be many reasons for hair loss, but in men 95% of all hair loss cases are related to male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is hair loss which is a result of genetic sensitivity to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (“DHT”). This is also the main cause in women. Your genetics (meaning your heredity) determines if your hair follicles are sensitive to DHT. 8 out of 10 men and 4 out of 10 women will suffer form pattern baldness during their lifetime as they carry the genetic sensitivity plus high levels of DHT (in women this is relevant mostly starting middle-age). Your doctor can diagnose your hair loss cause, and recommend a baldness cure that is effective against pattern blandness. The most important thing is that once you notice thinning hair – rush to your doctor for advice and baldness treatment, the sooner – the better, as the damage can be best restored in early stages of baldness.

The best baldness treatment is a treatment that works internally and externally, contributing in two ways: by blocking the DHT from getting attached to its hair follicle receptors and stimulate the follicles to create hair (contradicts the DHT which damages the follicles and reduces hair generation). There are medications that do that and you can also find a natural hair loss treatment if drugs are not an option for you.

Propecia is the medication that your doctor most likely recommends as the preferred baldness treatment. It is a synthetic, FDA approved oral drug that reduces the production of enzymes that convert testosterone into DHT, hence reducing the DHT levels in the body. Propecia stops hair loss in 90% of the cases and promotes new hair growth in 60% of cases. The second solution your doctor will recommend is Minoxidil, a topical, FDA approved, over the counter baldness cure that can used by women as well. This topical baldness treatment is an effective follicles stimulant, and works by enhance the blood circulation and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the follicles.

Propecia and Minoxidil are synthetic drugs and may cause side effects. People who can't, or prefer not to use these medications, can use a natural hair loss treatment. There are oral and topical herbal and natural treatments that are safe to use and do not cause side effects. Unlike the only two FDA approved medication (Propecia and minoxidil) there are countless natural products that promise to be a natural hair loss treatment, but you should be suspicious and not accept any natural baldness cure, as some do not contain the ingredients that work. The list of effective products includes the laser comb, copper peptide topical solutions; Saw Palmetto based oral and topical products and azelaic acid. To see the full list of products – simply visit my site!

The Causes of Hair Loss in Women

By: Endah Purwani

You're not alone if you're experiencing breakage, increased hair shedding or significant hair loss.
Hair loss in women is most often very gradual and is more easily affected by hormonal changes, medical conditions, and external factors. Hair loss in women is no less distressing than in men. More often women s hair loss is limited to the thinning of the hair especially around the crown area. A receding hair line is rare in women. It usually starts with the hair follicle becoming thinner, revealing more skin.

Hair loss or hair shedding is consistent within the hair growth cycle and it is normal to lose some scalp hair each day. The average human scalp has roughly 100,000 to 150,000 individual hairs and the normal hair growth cycle results in the loosening or shedding of about 100 to 150 hairs on a daily basis. New hair growth then emerges from these same previous dormant hair follicles, growing at the average rate of about half an inch per month.

Baldness or Alopecia happens when the normal pattern of hair growth is disrupted. The normal pattern of human hair growth is growing, resting, shedding and growing again. For a woman, thick, vibrant hair is our crowning glory, our vanity visible. Our culture strongly identifies femininity with a thick, silky head of hair. Society unfairly identifies dry, lack luster and thinning hair with old age, sickness and poverty.

Reasons for hair loss include physical, emotional, and genetic conditions. Hair loss can occur from many common causes that most women do not even think of. The number of women who suffer from stress and hair loss is growing. Stress leads to various health conditions which cause hair loss.

A woman's hair is at its thickest by age 20. Once we pass 20, however, our hair gradually begins to thin, shedding more than the normal 100-150 hairs a day. For even the elderly woman, significant hair loss can threaten self image.

Female pattern baldness or Androgen tic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in women and is genetic in nature. The result is a shorter hair growth cycle, finer hair and excessive hair loss from shedding and breakage.

Coming off birth control pills and pregnancy can cause hair loss. Women may experience hair loss 2 - 3 months after having a baby.

Progesterone is another hormone that precisely targets the hair during menopause. It compensates by producing extra androstenedione, which prevents hair growth. Usually hair will return to its original thickness following menopause.

A healthy balanced diet, regular exercise, hydration and rest can go a long way towards preventing hair loss and maximizing the potential of your hair growth cycle.

Nutrition

Poor nutrition is often an underlying cause of hair loss as the hair is a reliable indicator of nutritional well being. Dull hair color or dry and brittle hair may be indicators of a deficiency in essential fats in the diet, oily hair may be a sign of a B vitamin deficiency.

Low-fat foods that rank high in protein, low in carbohydrates, can play a vital role in sustaining healthy hair growth and aid in preventing hair loss. Harsh chemicals may strip the natural oils from your hair and lead to breakage and poor hair growth. Dye, hair straightening and permanent solutions are highly destructive to the hair shaft and follicle as well as the delicate sebum balance of the scalp.

Be gentle with your hair. Allow hair to dry naturally rather than using a hair dryer. Wet hair is weak hair so handle with care.

Try not to constantly run your fingers through your hair, tug at the hair and avoid hair clips or rubber bands that pull at and break off the hair. Minimize the usage of mousse, gels and hair sprays. These products dry and weigh down the hair shaft and dull the natural luster of your hair.
Harsh hair treatment such as pulling with brushes, tight braiding and styling with irons and strengtheners can be a cause of female thinning hair.

Sun worshippers should make sure that hair care products have sunscreen properties to protect hair from the damaging affects of UV rays.

Hair loss is traumatic, however our hair is only part of who we are. Remember, that for some hair grows back as mysteriously as it disappeared

Finding what has caused your hair loss will greatly increase your chances of finding the right treatments to help re grow your hair.

How to Treat Hair Loss and Thinning Hair

By: anonymous

Whether it's clumps of hair coming out as you brush or visible thinning of your hair on your scalp, discovering that you're losing your hair can be extremely distressing. It can also have a negative effect on your self-confidence. Although hair loss and thinning hair are most typically associated with men, many women also suffer from such problems to some degree. However, there's no reason to lose hope, as there are many treatment methods available that can be used to prevent further hair loss and to stimulate the growth of new hairs. If you're suffering from hair loss or thinning hair and want to treat the problem, there are a number of simple steps that you can take.

1.Determine the cause of your hair loss or thinning hair. This may require the assistance of your doctor and is an important step because there are many different factors which can cause hair loss, including environmental, hormonal and genetic factors as well as medications and medical conditions. If, for example, your hair loss is caused by environmental factors, lifestyle changes may be necessary to prevent the problem from continuing.

2.Further consult with your doctor to find out if there are any forms of treatment that you should not undergo as a result any health problems or medical conditions that you may have. Then you will know which types of products to avoid.

3.Find a health supply retailer which offers quality products for treating hair loss. Such retailers can even be found online, such as Naturalwellbeing.com, so you can check out various products and treatment methods from the comfort and convenience of your own home.

4.Decide which treatment method will be best for you and your situation. For example, there are special shampoos and conditioners available that are designed to promote fast hair growth. There are also pills and scalp therapy formulas available for the same purpose.

5.Follow the treatment instructions accompanying the product you have chosen

Alopecia Areata

By: naturalremedies

Alopecia Areata is a disease that causes hair loss. It usually affects the scalp, but can also affect other areas of the body that have hair. The hair loss is quite rapid, and occurs in patches. Alopecia Areata (AA) is common form of hair loss, unpredictable and not painful disease. Usually people who suffer this disease are losing their hair in small, round patches from areas of the body, usually the scalp.

Alopecia Areata usually affects younger women and children. This condition has unknown causes, although in some cases, it happens because of the body's auto-immune response to form white cells and the hair follicles on the areas where the hair is commonly produced are attacked. A distinguishable polished area of the scalp that feels silky smooth commonly becomes noticeable. And the hairs that surround the bald areas are thin and break off easily. These may be extremely fine and the entire shaft of hair would resemble an exclamation mark.

Causes of Alopecia

The specific cause of alopecia areata is unknown. A family history of alopecia is present in about a fifth of all cases. Alopecia areata is occasionally associated with autoimmune diseases . --Normally the immune system protects the body against infection and disease. In an autoimmune disease, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body. In alopecia areata, the immune system attacks the hair follicles. For people whose genes put them at risk for the disease, some type of trigger starts the attack on the hair follicles. The triggers may be a virus or something in the person's environment.

Symptoms of Alopecia

Alopecia areata is actually a disease of the immune system and is commonly referred to as an autoimmune syndrome. This puts this disease into a class that also includes Crohn's disease as well as IBD and so on. The most common symptoms of alopecia areata is the hair loss on the head as well as the other parts of the body. The reason this occurs is the fact that the immune system starts to attack the hair follicles and stops them from growing hair or maintaining the root structure. When this happens the hair is no longer healthy and will fall out. With this particular form of alopecia you will normally have quarter sized patches of hair loss on the scalp and men can suffer from the same on the chest and so on.

Treatment of Alopecia

1. Certain medications to promote hair growth (such as minoxidil and finasteride).

2. Treating any underlying condition or disease.

3. Corticosteroid injections (when treating alopecia areata).

4. Scalp reduction.

5. A doctor can prescribe several drugs, including creams and steroid injections. Many people also respond well to drugs that promote hair growth.

Sufferers of alopecia areata should not give up hope of a cure as there are many ongoing research projects are currently being undertaken. Some of the most promising involve gene therapy, stem cells research and hair follicle development and new alopecia areata treatments will continue to be made available.

Propecia For Male Pattern Hair Loss

By: Kathlene Capelle

There are many medications that can deal with male hair loss. A well known medication is known as Propecia. This particular medication is designed to specifically help men who are experiencing male pattern hair loss. In clinical studies, hair count increased during the first year and was maintained in those that took Propecia for 24 months. If you wish to take Propecia, it is useful to know how this medication can possibly help you in your hair loss.

Propecia, in generic terms is known as Finasteride. It is known to help men that are dealing with male pattern hair loss, also known as DHT. This particular pattern of baldness and hair loss is known to directly affect men because of genetics that are inherited from both their mother and father. The genes cause the hormone of DHT to react with the enzymes that are located in the scalp and hair region. When this happens, hair begins to thin and eventually causes for it to fall out completely.

Propecia is a prescription medication that has proven to be more effective in men than in women. Propecia will interact with male pattern baldness by adding an androgen hormone as a possible treatment. This will then balance out with the enzymes and other chemicals that are causing hair loss.

Women must not use Propecia when they are pregnant or hoping to get pregnant. Propecia can potentially cause abnormalities of the male baby's sex organs, a condition known as hypospadias. Additionally, women should not handle crushed or broken tablets when they are pregnant or may potentially be pregnant.

Propecia is FDA approved. Despite this, there are side effects to taking Propecia. Because of the added hormone, a small percentage of men have reported less desire for sex and difficulty in achieving an erection and/or a decrease in the amount of semen.

There may also be possible allergic reactions that occur, which can be noted from rashes, itching or irritation that takes place. If you should observe any of these symptoms, it is best to stop taking the medication and ask your doctor before you continue with the prescription.

Propecia is one of several medications that are available for those dealing with male pattern hair loss. Speak to your doctor to find out more about Propecia if you are interested to use this medication to help you in your treatment of falling hair. Knowing what your options are and evaluating your risks, will ensure that you make the best choice possible for treating your male pattern hair loss.

Stop Female Hair Loss

Combat Female Hair Loss

By: Andrew Skipper

“Oh no!” thought Dorothy when one day while nursing her baby, she found that she had left behind a whole lot of hair on her pillow. She was shocked. She immediately called up her doctor to find out the reasons for such hair loss.

Female pattern hair loss or alopecia is not uncommon. Baldness or hair shedding can be genetic, as it is in men. However, there are other causes for female hair loss. One of the most common causes is childbirth – post-partum hair loss. During pregnancy the woman’s hair is in the resting phase. However, after delivery, women witness hair loss at a rapid stage though this is normally temporary. Women who take birth control pills can also have more of a tendency towards thinning hair.

Temporary hair shedding is seen in people taking medicines for gout, acne, thyroid and arthritis. Cancer treatment drugs can stop hair cell division. Hair becomes thin and eventually breaks off from the scalp. It is a temporary phase and hair regroups after the treatment is stopped usually.

Female hair loss can be a result of eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. You need to have a proper nutritious diet and drink plenty of water to retain healthy hair.

Over excessive styling can also damage your hair – colourants, straightening and other forms of styling can damage the hair remember.

Don’t panic, if your doctor suggests some clinical tests to check hormonal levels and blood count. This will help him to do a correct diagnosis for hair loss.

Now, you need to analyse the different types of hair loss. As Combat-Hair-Loss.co.uk states the two main types of female hair loss are Anagen effluvium and Telogen effluvium. Anagen effluvium is due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, that poison the growing hair follicle.

Telogen effluvium is a result of mental and physical stress, anaemia, weight change, hormonal imbalance and thyroid abnormalities usually.

Hair loss treatments include DHT (dihytestosterone) inhibitors, which reduce the production of DHT. This type of treatment addresses the root of female hair loss.

Super Oxide Dismutase and anti-inflammatory’s treatment addresses the problem of inflammation of the scalp while growth stimulators look to promote growth but do not actually address the cause of hair loss. Another kind of treatment that you can go in for is anti-androgens that help in hair loss prevention.

Some highly recommended hair loss products by Combat Hair Loss are Thymuskin, Tricomin, and HairMax Laser comb.

Hair Loss Help

With Chinese New Year arriving in just 3 days' time and all the festive mood of Chinese New year reving up and culminating in a sky-high (literally and figuratively) midnight of fireworks and firecrackers this Sunday 14 Feb 10, it seems completely irrelevant and daft (learnt this word recently from the news!) on how hair loss should come into picture at all on this festive season !

However, this relevancy is not all lost during Chinese New Year, let me tell you why.

One or two weeks before Chinese New Year: Spring Cleaning:

First of all, as we know, stress does play a factor in inducing hair loss. With the hustle and bustle of Chinese New Year, many of us, already busy with work and life, have to find time off our hectic schedule to clear our houses and do spring cleaning for that big day of the Chinese lunar year! The stress (of finding time and clearing the houses) can shed some of your precious strands of hair!

One or two days before Chinese New Year: Ang Baos:

Secondly, for those married couples, another whammy to their precious locks of hair: ang baos (red packets)! It is customary for married couples to give red packets to their juniors when it comes to Chinese New Year. With economy just on the mend, whatever money that could be saved is a bonus. Having to come out, fork out, cough out (select any of these terms depending on your circumstances) in preparing the ang baos can add to the stress of Chinese New Year and your hair loss!

During Chinese New Year: Questions

Chinese New Year is one of the very few occasions where families, friends and relatives get together. With Singaporeans hard at work, busy with family commitments, it can be more rare for more regular gatherings of family and relatives these days. Thus on these days of Chinese New Year, where families go around visiting friends, all these oft-asked questions which have long become clich├ęs will be heard once again. Hearing questions like “Are you married?”, “What are you working as”, “How is your children’s results?” ….and more will cause more stress and induce more hair strands to fall.

One last special question

To add to the whole slew of aforementioned questions that would be asked during Chinese New Year, this question is more targeted towards hair loss suffers: “What happens to your hair?” Friends and relatives who have not seen the hair loss sufferers for a year or so may be prompted to ask this!

Receding Hairline

Last time before I suffered hair thinning and hair loss problem, I thought my manager's hair was quite well-combed. However I was wrong, he did not even gelled his hair. His hair has simply drop and drop so that it was then no longer able for him to comb. As a result of hair loss, there were no more volume of hair for him to comb using water or gel and hence he did not comb his hair at all. With his little hair, his hair still looked pretty decent and well-cut.

However, for hair loss sufferers, many of us believe that hair loss would cause a bald patch at the top or side of hair. This is not the case solely. If you suffer hair loss, you will find your hairline receding too! What do I mean by that? Well our hair also covers some parts of our top of the face near our wrinkle areas. If you are losing hair, over time, you will find the sides of your hair receding up, followed by the top. These will soon meet the 'O' shape balding at the top of the scalp, forming a 'M' pattern balding so common of men.

Seek treatment now for your hair loss while you are able to do remedy!

How to treat hair loss?

I love to trawl the internet to read the many literature, old and latest on the ways to cure and treat hair loss.

These few days, I have been researching on a topic as to whether taking cold showers will help to improve hair loss conditions.

Well, there is really a lot of literature you can google yourself on the aforementioned topic. However I would like to caution you that much of those literature you find on the internet may not be endorsed by doctors as a whole. If you would want to give it a try, you can go ahead but be aware of the averse side effects which you may not know or learn about.

Good Lucks :)
